Two Essays by F.J.C. Skeffington & James A. Joyce, 1901
This pamphlet, published in October 1901 by James Joyce and his friend Francis Sheehy Skeffington (‘MacCann’ in A Portrait), contains their two essays which were refused publication in the University magazine St Stephen’s. Joyce’s contribution, ‘The Day of the Rabblement’, was an attack on the parochialism of the Irish Literary Theatre; Skeffington’s essay advocated equal status for women in the University. This copy, one of only 85 printed, remained in the possession of the Sheehy-Skeffington family until 1989 when it was acquired by Bord Fáilte and presented to the Tower.
