Our Exagmination Round his Factification for Incamination of Work in Progress by Samuel Beckett et al, first edition, Shakespeare and Company 1929
James Joyce’s ‘work in progress’, begun in 1923, was arousing considerable interest and also considerable bafflement. In an attempt to increase the one and reduce the other, Joyce enlisted twelve disciples (including the 23-year-old Samuel Beckett) to contribute a book of essays about the project. Two ‘letters of protest’, by G.V.L. Slingsby and Vladimir Dixon, were also included. Confident of sales, Sylvia Beach published not only atrade edition but also a limited edition of 96. This copy, once owned by the Irish republican activist C.S. ‘Todd’ Andrews, was presented to the museum in 2016 by Malachy Prunty on behalf of the late Joyce Andrews.
