Portrait of Harry Norman by John Butler Yeats 1902

Harry Norman (1868 -1947) was the editor of The Irish Homestead, for whom, at the invitation of George Russell, Joyce submitted the first of the stories which were collected in his book Dubliners. Norman published ‘The Sisters’ in the Homestead on 13 August 1904, followed by ‘Eveline’ and ‘After the Race’, but declined to take further stories due to complaints from readers. He is mentioned in passing in Ulysses. This drawing of Harry Norman by John Butler Yeats (father of the poet) was bequeathed to the museum by Christopher Pulvertaft.
