Handwritten poem by Donagh MacDonagh on the occasion of the opening of the Tower as a museum

A year of war in Ireland gave us Joyce/An exile who in Paris lived our life/And through a cunning silence was our voice./He, like the Wild Geese, fled and yet retained / Our speech our humour and our songs and ways / Remained himself a Dubliner forever / And every day lived out his Dublin days; / And yet without this one courageous woman / Indomitable still who can enjoy / Our life our town, Joyce might have waited long – / A Ulysses returning late from Troy. / June 16, 1962. DONAGH MAC DONAGH. Donated by his son and daughter (Barbara and Niall).
