IN THE HEART OF THE HIBERNIAN METROPOLIS. Mr Bloom goes to the offices of the Freeman’s Journal on Princes St to arrange for an ad. He explains to the foreman Nannetti “Two crossed keys here. A circle. Then here the name. Alexander Keyes, tea, wine and spirit merchant”. In the editor’s office, a number of pressmen engage in windy rhetoric. Aeolus is the god of the winds, and the chapter is full of allusions to moving air. Stephen Dedalus arrives with O’Madden Burke with the intention of getting Mr Deasy’s foot and mouth letter printed in the Evening Telegraph. The editor agrees. At Stephen’s suggestion they all head for a pint in Mooney’s. Bloom tries unsuccessfully to negotiate a better deal for the Keys ad. They turn left onto Abbey Street and Stephen tells his “Parable of the Plums”
