8A Little Britain Street - Cyclops
Episode: Cyclops
The nameless narrator of this chapter bumps into Joe Hynes in Stony Batter and they agree to go to Barny Kieran’s pub in Little Britain Street. Joe wants to talk to the Citizen about the foot and mouth. The narration of this chapter is interspersed with stylistically varied interpolations. The passage “In Inisfail the fair there lies a land, the land of holy Michan” is contrasted with “So we turned into Barney Kiernan’s and there, sure enough, was the citizen”. Bloom is waiting for Martin Cunningham and is invited to join the men in the bar. The talk is of politics and nationalism. A rumour is spreading that Bloom has won money on the Ascot Gold Cup. The Citizen attacks Bloom for being Jewish drunkenly shouting “Three cheers for Israel!”. Bloom stands up for himself retorting “Christ was a jew like me” before making a quick exit.
