Summerfield House, Dalkey Avenue - Nestor

Stephen Dedalus attends the Clifton School, Dalkey Avenue where teaches history and poetry to a class of small boys. Prompted by thoughts of Christ’s riddling sentence that baffled the Pharisees, he shares his own obscure riddle, but the answer confounds the children who instead go to play hockey at 10. Stephen goes to meet the headmaster Mr Deasy in his office to receive his wages. After holding forth on history and economics, Deasy asks Stephen to help him arrange for his letter, about the foot and mouth disease, to be published in the press. Stephen agrees to help him in his fight, thinking “Mulligan will dub me a new name: the bullockbefriending bard.”
