The Weavers by Gerhart Hauptmann 1899, inscribed by James Joyce 1900

This book is inscribed on title page: Jas. A. Joyce / January 1900. Donated by Donagh McDonagh, a trustee of the James Joyce Tower society, in 1962.

James Joyce wrote: ‘Hauptmann has written two or three masterpieces - a little immortal thing like The Weavers for instance’ (Letters II 106). In A Painful Case Mr Duffy has “a manuscript translation of Hauptmann’s Michael Kramer, the stage directions of which were written in purple ink, and a little sheaf of papers held together by a brass pin. In these sheets a sentence was inscribed from time to time.”
