Ulysses by James Joyce, first edition 1922 in box cover, No 819/1000

The acclaim and the controversy which greeted the publication of Ulysses established James Joyce’s reputation as one of the greatest writers of the age. The first edition, one hundred copies of which were personally signed by Joyce, sold out almost immediately, and a second edition of 2,000 copies was printed for the Egoist Press in October 1922. This copy of Ulysses, No 819 of the first edition, was acquired for the Tower by P.J. Carroll & Company Limited through the generous offices of the Regional Tourism Investment Trust.
