Ulysses by James Joyce, Bodley Head 1936, No 268/1000

When the ban on Ulysses was raised it was published in New York by Random House and in London by Bodley Head, who followed this special edition with an ordinary trade edition which remained the standard UK version until 1960. The Random House editions were distinguished by the enormous capital letters S, M and P at the openings of the three sections of the novel. Both publishers perpetuated and added to the errors of previous editions. This edition included three appendices: the texts of the international protest against Samuel Roth, who pirated Ulysses in the USA, and the injunction which prevented him; the text of the Woolsey decision allowing the publication of Ulysses in America and related correspondence; and a bibliography of works by James Joyce.
