Fragment of 2 Millbourne Avenue
John Joyce moved to 2 Millbourne Avenue, Drumcondra, Dublin with his wife and ten children in early March 1894, when James Joyce was twelve years old and attending Belvedere College. The house is described in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and was vacated by the family when they moved to North Richmond Street in late 1894 or early 1895. It was demolished in 1999 despite widespread protest. Mr. Brendan Kilty, Barrister, saved the rubble and presented this piece to the museum on the 9th June, 2000. B. J. Kilty is the restorer to the James Joyce house at 15 Usher’s Island that was the setting for the short story ‘The Dead’.
