GRETTA is a collection of drawings, inspired by James Joyce’s short story ‘The Dead’. As Joyce portrays in words the effect of music on Gretta listening to ‘The Lass of Aughrim’, so too do these drawings capture that sense of escape from the body’s physical ties, to the realm of the imagined. Passion, connection, wit, the mind’s meandering and feelings evoked by a piece of music, are here transposed on paper. Created over a period of 10 years in Dublin and Berlin, these compositions, at times wild and dark, allow us with our 21st century gaze to reconnect with Joyce’s unique depiction of Dubliners of the 1900’s.
