Joyce Tower Digital Twin
Welcome to an interactive model of the James Joyce Tower & Museum, Sandycove. This model has been developed to enable Ulysses readers worldwide, visit the Martello Tower location of the opening Telemachus episode of his masterpiece.
You can access all public areas of the Tower and Museum, emerge from the stairhead with Stately, plump Buck Mulligan, watch In the gloomy domed livingroom of the tower…Two shafts of soft daylight and caper down towards the fortyfoot hole.
You can examine the coveted key, hear Joyce’s guitar, listen to Sylvia Beach, or just enjoy the surrounding country and the awaking mountains. Though the Muglins are clearly visible, sadly the blunt cape of Bray Head cannot be discerned.
This digital model arose from a serendipitous encounter and propitious discussion on 2.2.2022 (Ulysses 100th Anniversary) between FJT volunteers Niall Murray and Eoin Ó Cuirc. Tower access had been briefly restored to celebrate the momentous occasion and following the cutting of the birthday cake both agreed to collaborate on an anniversary project to enable virtual visits and share this particular location with Joyceans universal. Niall’s photographic eye, technical savvy and indefatigability have presented a valuable gift to all readers of Ulysses.
Friends of Joyce Tower are overjoyed to deliver Version 1.1 of this model to a worldwide audience in time for Bloomsday 2022 and we hope that all our visitors, physical and virtual, will use this fantastic resource to enhance their appreciation and understanding of the life and writings of James Joyce.
