Original MS statement by James Joyce for Swiss authorities 1940
Joyce and his family left Paris in December 1939 after the outbreak of the war. They spent a year in St-Gérand-le-Puy near Vichy, attempting to arrange exit visas into neutral Switzerland, and finally left France on 14th December to travel to Zurich. Less than a month after their arrival Joyce died of a perforated ulcer. Given by Paul Ruggiero, 1966.
