Embroidered waistcoat inherited by James Joyce from his father
“I got from him his portraits, a waistcoat, a good tenor voice, and an extravagant licentious disposition…” (Letter from James Joyce to Harriet Weaver, 1932). The waistcoat, which is described in ‘The Dead’, was worn frequently by Joyce, on his birthdays and at Christmas, and is recalled in several Memoirs of him. After Joyce died his son Giorgio gave the waistcoat to Samuel Becket who donated it to the Tower in 1963.
